Continuing the series of techniques in rapier and dagger, this video offers a very brief introduction to the lunge. This is a very powerful attack, but has its problems. It is easy for the fencer to over commit and be vulnerable to counter attack. often, this is because students tend to lunge in a very extended form used in sports fencing; this is great for scoring points, but dangerous in a martial situation.
This video will teach the basics, including footwork and body posture. It will show different versions of the technique as well as how to withdraw in guard. The techniques are mainly Italian, but also include a type described in French texts, such as Francois Dancie. This video can be used in companion with the introduction to the girata and the introduction to the offline step.
